• Born in 1797 as Isabella Baumfree
• Born at the Hardenburgh Estate in Swartekill, Ulster County
• One of 13 children
• A slave - sold as early as age 9
• Suffered unspeakable hardships as a slave
• Eventually became a remarkable preacher
• Spoke out for women's rights
• Spoke out against slavery
